Rimini. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance
CAVOUR SQUARE
If Piazza Tre Martiri was the heart of Romanity, Piazza Cavour was the centre of the mediaeval town. Protagonist is the Palazzo dell'Arengo (1204), next to it the Palazzo del Podestà (1330) and in front of it the statue of Pope Paul V (1614). Leonardo da Vinci was enthralled by the sound of water produced by the 15 spouts of the Fontana della Pigna. On the short side of the square is the historic Galli Theatre.
CASTEL SISMONDO
From Piazza Cavour you reach Piazza Malatesta. The mighty Castel Sismondo (1437) is the classic Renaissance manor house. Designed by Sigismondo himself who had Brunelleschi as a consultant. Today the large central core remains.
MALATESTA TEMPLE
Designed by a giant in the history of architecture, Leon Battista Alberti, the Malatesta Temple (1450), a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, contains a number of treasures: a Crucifix by Giotto, a fresco by Piero della Francesca, the precious bas-reliefs of angels playing on a blue background. The peculiarity of the Malatesta Temple is that for the first time, in the midst of Renaissance philosophy, not only God is celebrated, but rather a man, Sigismondo.
