San Leo. The Castle of Cagliostro
San Leo, located in the province of Rimini, is a fascinating medieval village that stands on an imposing rocky mass with sheer walls. This ancient village is known for its extraordinary geological conformation and rich history, which makes it an excellent tourist destination.
Fortress of San Leo: The Fortress of San Leo is one of the best preserved structures in Italy. Located on the top of the rocky spur, the fortress offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding valley. The fortress is famous for having hosted the magician Cagliostro, who spent the last years of his life there.
Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta: This ancient Romanesque church is one of the main places of worship in San Leo. The parish church is an extraordinary example of pre-Romanesque and Romanesque architecture, with frescoes and decorations that tell the religious history of the village.
Cathedral of San Leone: Consecrated in 1173, the cathedral is dedicated to Saint Leo, the first bishop of the diocese of Montefeltro. The cathedral is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, with an imposing façade and interiors rich in works of art.
Palazzo Mediceo: This elegant Renaissance palace houses the Museum of Sacred Art, with a vast collection of religious art and historical artefacts. The palace is an example of Renaissance architecture and offers a glimpse into the history and culture of San Leo.
Civic Tower: Located in the main square of the town, the Civic Tower is another historical point of interest. The tower offers a panoramic view of the town and the surrounding valley.
San Leo is closely linked to the enigmatic figure of Alessandro di Cagliostro, born Giuseppe Balsamo, an Italian adventurer, alchemist and Freemason born in Palermo in 1743. Cagliostro is known for his esoteric practices and adventurous life, which led him to travel to European courts and form friendships with prominent personalities.
Cagliostro was arrested by the Catholic Church for heresy and seditious activities and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was locked up in the fortress of San Leo, where he spent the last years of his life. His cell, known as ‘il pozzetto’ (the well), was one of the dreariest and dampest in the fortress. The figure of Cagliostro is shrouded in mystery, and his many activities as an alchemist and healer continue to arouse interest.
San Leo is an ideal destination for lovers of history, art and nature. The village offers a unique atmosphere, with cobbled streets, historic buildings and breathtaking views. It is a perfect place for a day trip or weekend break, where you can explore the thousand-year history of Montefeltro and enjoy the natural beauty of the Marecchia Valley.
